Yield / Stablecoins
STABLECOIN YIELD, UNPACKED.
A stablecoin’s target value and a strategy’s source of return are two separate things to investigate.
Separate the token from the strategy
A stablecoin is designed to track a reference value, often a currency. That design alone does not explain how a separate application produces yield for the holder. Lending, liquidity provision, incentives, or another strategy may generate the return.
Write two descriptions: how the stablecoin aims to maintain its value, and how the proposed yield arrangement uses it. If either description is unclear, comparing rates is premature. The yield overview provides a map of the different activities.
Ask what supports the target value
Review the design of backing, collateral, redemption, and the parties involved. Distinguish the ability to redeem with an issuer from the ability to sell through an exchange or liquidity pool. Access to one route does not prove access to the other.
A target price is not a guarantee that every trade will execute at that price. Market liquidity, redemption conditions, and confidence in the backing can matter. Use the Ethereum stablecoin introduction as a starting point, then read the specific asset’s documentation.
Identify who or what pays the return
- Lending: Understand borrowing demand, collateral, liquidation mechanics, and available withdrawal liquidity.
- Trading liquidity: Identify fees, market exposure, and the pool’s assets and rules.
- Incentives: Check the denomination, duration, and conditions attached to reward tokens.
- Managed strategies: Read the strategy permissions, allocation rules, costs, and exit conditions.
A product may combine several sources. Ask for a breakdown rather than attributing every component to the stablecoin itself.
Review the complete withdrawal route
You may need to leave a strategy, redeem a receipt, convert an asset, and then use the stablecoin’s own redemption process. Each step can have different permissions and timing. Document the point at which you actually hold a spendable asset.
Keep costs and potential market differences in the same assessment as the quoted return. The reward-rate guide helps with rate assumptions, and the risk framework helps identify dependencies.
Use precise language
A button labeled “stake stablecoins” may represent an application deposit rather than native validator staking. Name the underlying activity in your notes. That small step makes it easier to evaluate the right documentation and understand what could change the outcome.
